The franchise of Ruth and Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle, Jeter and Rivera is a pinstriped mess. The only recognizable thing about this storied club is the "New York" stitched across the chests. These are the Damned Yankees. Much of the baseball world is gloating about the misfortune of America's most famous sports team, the one that always receives out-of-proportion media coverage and excessive slots in the national television lineup. But here's the thing: It's much more fun to pile on the haughty Yankees when they're piling up pennants. This squad is in last place with a losing record as September beckons.

More NFL hopefuls are getting an opportunity to stick around a little longer to showcase their skills this summer. One cutdown deadline will make things more difficult for personnel staffs because 1,184 players will become available at the same time. Teams are relying on their scouting evaluations to be prepared to scoop up talented players who get cut. Plus, they'll be busy assembling a 16-man practice squad so it's going to be a hectic time. When the league eliminated the first two rounds of roster cuts in March, it allowed teams to carry 90 players throughout the preseason. Rosters have to be trimmed to 53 by Aug. 29.

There is no history of world-class, elite basketball success in the United Arab Emirates. The nation has never qualified for the Basketball World Cup, never reached the courts at the Olympics, never sent a player to the NBA. None of that matters. The game is coming to the oil-rich nation anyway. For the first time, USA Basketball's men's national team is about to play in Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital city on the shores of the Persian Gulf. A two-game slate of exhibitions — Greece on Friday, Germany on Sunday — will be the Americans' final tune-ups before they fly to the Philippines next week for the World Cup.

Sha'Carri Richardson stamped her name on the long, illustrious list of American sprint champions earlier this summer and also set the stakes for the year ahead of her and the rest of the fast pack of 100-meter runners she's going against. She says "I'm not back. I'm better." Whether that is good enough to win gold medals starting this week at world championships and again less than 12 months from now at the Paris Olympics comes down to whether she can finish in front of defending and five-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson. The women take to the track Sunday with the men opening the meet with preliminary heats Saturday.

U.S. women’s national team coach Vlatko Andonovski has resigned, a person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press. The move comes less than two weeks after the Americans were knocked out of the Women’s World Cup earlier than ever before. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the move has not been officially announced. The four-time champion struggled through this World Cup. The Americans played well in the round of 16 against Sweden but ultimately fell on penalties after a scoreless tie. The U.S. scored just four goals over the course of the tournament. The United States had never finished worse than third previously.

LOS ANGELES — Michael Oher, the NFL veteran whose life inspired the movie "The Blind Side" and who is suing his conservators Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, is now being accused of repeatedly attempting to shake down the couple for $15 million. The couple's attorney, Martin D. Singer, released a scathing statement about Oher's petition, which the football star filed Monday in Tennessee probate ...

The Las Vegas Raiders removed first-round draft pick Tyree Wilson off the non-football injury list on Wednesday, and wide receiver Davante Adams returned to practice after a short absence.

There are some rising star players on this U.S. roster for the Basketball World Cup. Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Brandon Ingram and Jaren Jackson Jr. have already been All-Stars. Jalen Brunson should be one soon. Jackson Jr. is the reigning NBA defensive player of the year and Paolo Banchero is the NBA rookie of the year. But the biggest names in terms of star power might be the guys who'll wear polo shirts. The U.S. assembled an All-Star coaching staff for this tournament, with Golden State's Steve Kerr leading a group that has the Los Angeles Clippers' Tyronn Lue, Miami's Erik Spoelstra and Gonzaga's Mark Few as his assistants.

A lawyer for a prominent Memphis couple with a longstanding relationship to former NFL player Michael Oher says that they want to end a conservatorship that he's challenging in court. Lawyer Randall Fishman says Wednesday that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy intend to enter into a consent order to end the conservatorship. Oher filed a petition Monday in Tennessee accusing the Tuohys of lying to him by having him sign papers making them his conservators. Oher, now 37, wants a full accounting of assets. He says he received nothing from the Oscar-nominated movie "The Blind Side." The Tuohys have called the allegations ridiculous and part of a shakedown attempt.

The BMW Championship is the final event that decides who reaches the FedEx Cup finale. For the Americans, it has nothing to do with money. The cup on their minds is the Ryder Cup. The BMW Championship starts Thursday at Olympia Fields outside of Chicago. It's the last tournament for Americans to earn six automatic spots on the team that goes to Rome. And then next week after the Tour Championship, the six captain's picks are named. Keegan Bradley says he can't stop thinking about the Ryder Cup. Lucas Glover has been trying to make the team since he turned pro.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Four-time Pro Bowler Chris Harris, who won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 2015, has visited — and competed in — a lot of football stadiums during his four years at the University of Kansas and 12 seasons in the NFL. The 34-year-old Tulsa, Oklahoma native, who played defensive back at Kansas from 2007 to 2010, is convinced that the Jayhawks’ soon-to-be renovated David ...

When Matilda, a year old koala, woke up from her 20-hour nap, the first thing on her mind was food. Little did she know she had a far more important task - to predict the winner of the next match in the FIFA women’s world cup championship games being hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Yair…

Ten teams that made the playoffs last season have made a change at either offensive or defensive coordinator in 2023. Some like San Francisco and Philadelphia did it out necessity after coordinators got head coaching jobs. Other teams like Baltimore, Miami and the Chargers did it because they felt they needed a spark on one side of the ball or the other. Whether these changes lead to progress or a step back will go a long way in determining which of these teams will be contenders again in 2023.

The former doctor for British Cycling and Team Sky has been given a four-year ban from all sports for violating anti-doping rules. The sanction for Richard Freeman was handed down by an independent tribunal of the national anti-doping panel for possession of a prohibited substance and two separate charges of tampering. UK Anti-Doping says Freeman's ban was effective from Dec. 22, 2020 and that he is ineligible for any sporting activity until Dec. 21 next year. Freeman was a key figure in a period of success for British Cycling and Team Sky from 2010-2017 and worked closely with Bradley Wiggins.

WNBA teams are scoring at near record levels thanks in strong part to a quicker pace and some impressive individual efforts. Teams are averaging 82.6 points a game this season, just a shade under the full-season record set in 2018 of 82.8. During the bubble season in 2020 each team played just 22 games but the league scoring average was 83 points. Those totals are up about seven points a game from a decade ago with pace of play being a big reason for the increase. There's already been 10 40-point games this season by individual players. There were only 15 in the history of the league coming into 2023.
